Fight Hunger. Spark Change

“Thank you for helping us feed the fight against hunger.” -Walmart

On March 28th, Walmart kicked-off their annual “Fight Hunger. Spark Change” campaign in Walmart Super Centers, small stores and Neighborhood Markets across the country. The campaign, in short, partnered with Feeding America to raise money and awareness of the issue of hunger in the United States.

During the campaign, there were 4 easy ways to participate both in-store and online. Shoppers could contribute in store by purchasing one of the five participating items or by donating at the cash register upon check-out. Campbell’s Soup Company, General Mills, Kelloggs, Kraft Heinz and Pepsico were the five companies who printed the “Fight Hunger. Spark Change” logo on some of their items to be sold at Walmart for the campaign. With each participating product that was purchased, Walmart donated the equivalent of 10 meals to Feeding America Food Banks across the nation. With Walmart specifically targeting millennials in their efforts to inform and inspire participation, there were many options to participate by using social media. By liking, sharing or retweeting Walmart Corporate’s posts on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram about the campaign, Walmart donated 10 meals. By composing your own post with the hashtag “fighthunger”, Walmart donated 10 meals for each act. But Walmart didn’t stop there. Bringing in a new element of the campaign, Walmart developed their own emoji for Twitter when using their hashtag and their own snapchat filter to be used in store.

The campaign ended on April 25th and with several opportunities to participate, Walmart proved to run a successful campaign once again. By April 11th, Walmart had met its 1.5 million dollar pledge to donate for each use of campaign hashtag, snapchat filter, liking and sharing Walmart’s social content, and by clicking on the website button. That was a total of 1.65 million digital actions. The totals for the rest of the amount raised by this campaign is set to be released at a later date. Walmart's goal was to raise a total of $3 million.
